First FULL draft(s)

I framed this shot to show Sam on the darker side of the forest and also wearing a black top to connote the bad that will come later on in the video. The position of the two in the shot shows him to be taking up more of the shot and meaning Vicki is in a smaller space to show vulnerability. She is also wearing light colours to connote good and innocence which supports Levi Strauss' theory of binary opposites as there is one good and one bad.

In the parts of the video where i wanted to show Vicki sad, angry or alone i used the room with the grey background to represent the fact that she feels this way and also had no colour in her life. The red on her top can connote two different things: firstly that she is still in love with him even though they're not together and also that she is angry as red can also connote danger or anger.

This shot is framed in such a way that you can see both of the backgrounds that i used to show the contrasting emotions that my protagonist feels throughout the video. it also shows a barrier in the way of the brightly coloured background that represents happiness and love.

this shot is similar to the previous but shows the two next to each other. I edited the two different shots to make the left one brighter and the right one less saturated to represent the happiness and sadness in them.

To show the protagonist/artist's personality i used other things to represent the love in her life rather than just another person. I used animals and photography to present her as a loving character so that when the audience sees her sad they sympathise for her and feel more sad when it happens.

Post Modern Media

Post-modern media [1950’s – now ?]
Features of a post-modern society
·         State of hyperreality (media reality is more real than reality)(simulacra)
·         Style over substance ad content (looks good, means nothing)
·         High and low culture – breakdown of distinction
·         Decline of meta-narrative
·         Death of the author – Roland Barnes
·         Subjective over objective
·         Multiple realities
Post-modern = after/against modernism
there is not definition of post-modernism because we are still living in a post-modern era
·         Rise of the mass media
·         Magazines/newspaper
·         Advertising
·         Digital media à no one’s had this before so it helps define post modernism
Exploring the nature and impact
how the key concepts
Modernism looked forward – radio, cinema
everything’s been done in post-moderism: narrative e.c.t so no narrative is now new (e.g. western, romance, aliens)
One main feature of post-modernism is nostalgia
it looks to the past
intertextuality – refers to old texts that have been created and mixes them up to make something new (e.g. western + aliens = alien westerns)
Criticism – philosophers only base their ideas on America and western societies (not Africa and Asia e.c.t.) because they argue that those places are the most advanced
Rene Magrite – ‘the treachery of images’ (pipe painting)
We all get out information about everything from media. It no longer reflects society as it is reality and society
New media

Theorists
·         Jean Baudrilard (hyperreality)
·         Jean Francois (yotard)(meta-narratives)
·         Fredrick Jameson (commodification of culture)
·         Strinati (media is society)
What is post modernism?
·         A series of ideas
·         Greeks love nature (classicism)
·         Nature is perfect (neoclassicism)
·         Scientists wanted to prove it is perfect
·         Feelings are more important that facts (romanticism)
·         Modernism and post-modernism
Technology leads to progress                                        mixes ideas up
fixed ideas                                                                            (backwards narratives)
1 channel in 1950s tv                                                         irony – key feature                                                                                                             100’s channels on tv now
Society fragmented – people define themselves through more things now like hair colour, music taste, fashion e.c.t.
meta-narrative – single organising structure e.g. the church/religion
the decline of the meta-narrative – no one goes to church like they used to anymore
we don’t challenge the media representation
Post-modern aesthetic is the look over meaning/style over substance
In the past there was a clear distinction between high and low culture. High culture was more important and now there is none
Classicism
Neo – classicism
(the Enlightenment)
romanticism
modernism

Marxism
Nietche
à ‘God is dead’
Freud
We are living in post-modernity
Post-war Europe – the cold war (WWII)
industrialised murder
rationalised thoughts brought murder and war
                                 ^--and enlightenment
Cold war
Two opposite (places) meta-narratives (west vs east)
Vietnam war – sent people to war
                          - camera crews able to film the war & broadast back to USA
Segregation

Shoot for my ancillary texts

When it came to editing these photos on Photoshop, then i enlarged the picture it appeared that the camera quality was poor and i am now not able to use the photos as i would have liked. this means that i now have to re shoot these pictures for my ancillary texts. However even though this setback will cost me time i know the poses and types of shot i want to have and so re shooting them shouldn't take a lot of time to do. I can also create my whole ancillary text on Photoshop but without using the photos in my final piece.

More music video changes

The final music video will be about my main character - Vicki - starring in a music video. This means that I will have to film some extra videos that aren't scripted in my storyboard. These will include:

  1. Before the song starts:

  • we see multiple shots of a CD and someone putting it into a tv/computer
  • the CD used in the video will be my ancillary text of a digipak
  • we don't see the persons face whilst they are doing this
  • once the CD is in it then cuts to a shot of vicki's face
  • in the background we see the other ancillary text i will create of a magazine advertisement placed inside a real magazine
  • the music video will start playing
  2. at 1:01
  • change the clip of vicki walking out of the room to new shots of her watching the video and reacting to it
  • quieten the music so it becomes 'background' noise
  3. at 2:08
  • change the clip of the car reversing down the road
  • we see vicki reacting again but this time looking more sad (shows her decoding the message that was encoded in the video she is starring in)
  • in the background we see photos of her on 'set' and during 'shooting' the video
  4. at the end of the music video she is watching
  • the final shot will continue as the music stops and we hear someone say 'cut' on the DVD. the camera then pans out from the final shot to show the 'set' and 'costumes', 'makeup', 'script', 'camera' e.c.t.
  • the video will then stop on the tv
  • the camera switches to looking at vicki and pans out to show she was actually watching it with the second character from the CD - sam .

Filming diary

Today was the second time I filmed. I booked a camera out for the weekend and arranged to film with Vicki on the Sunday. This gave me the chance to film on Saturday, the parts of my video that I didn’t need to have anyone in. As one of the concepts of my video is that ‘We all want love’, I wanted to show that this may not only refer to just another person and so I went and filmed lots of inanimate objects to show that my protagonist isn't just concerned with love from another person, but also through things she already has such as the trophies, her jewellery and her phone and purse. Ultimately, this meant that I was able to film a wide range of shots of things such as those listed to be added to my music video.

As Vicki passed her driving test and got a car at the very end of November, being able to get her to my house was easy as she didn't need to rely on anybody else for transport. However, I wanted to film the shots where she is looking sad and remembering her relationship with Sam so needed her to be wearing dull colours as well as some red but as she didn't have anything suitable to wear, I organised the costume at my house once she had arrived. I am lucky to have two rooms, one of which is grey and the other is brightly coloured. This meant that I could also film her in the bright room too so I used the time I had with her more efficiently on the one day rather than spread the filming out over another weekend.

FIRST MUSIC VIDEO INCOMPLETE DRAFT

This is my first draft of my music video. I spent around 2-3 weeks editing it together after using videos from 5 sessions of filming. Although it isn't a full music video, there are only a few parts that still need putting in. This is because I began my first day of filming before I decided to change my storyboard. After i had re-written some of it i then had to organise a day to film the new parts of the storyboard. On the first day of editing I decided that i would follow my storyboard exactly and so edited the videos to the exact same times as i had planned out. However, it then turned out that it was a really boring video and I decided to change it. I booked out a camera and took inspiration from the 3 videos in an earlier post and went and added some extra shots in editing. Although this draft doesn't match the storyboard exactly, i still used videos from it and most are in the same place as i had planned out except i have added in some extra videos and made shots that were supposed to last for 5 seconds long, last for shorter times.

Filming/New Ideas

As i have started editing i have noticed that the video doesn't look very exciting as there is not much movement and a lot of my shots last for 4/5 seconds which initially i didn't think seemed that long. However, when the camera isn't moving the shot looked dull. I then decided that i would have a few shots which were a number of videos sped up and put together to last a few seconds that would create a more exciting few seconds. I decided to go out at the weekend and film a few shots of the Christmas lights which would appear in my video for about 1 second in a montage of lots of clips edited together really fast. The lights were mainly purple and blue and white which was good because the connotations these colours have are passion and love with the purple but also the blue connotes sadness and loneliness which are both of the main emotions i want my main character and artist in my video to be portraying.

I have also watched 3 more music videos which have been recommended for me to see and I have found out that instead of having one action from one angle for 6 seconds at a time, to do the same action but from multiple different angles which means that the video is more exciting and not just one shot being boring because of the faster edits. However, it won't seem like faster edits because it will be the same actions happening.

Ellie Goulding - Your Song
I like the effects that have been used on the video here because it makes it look 'softer' and less like a harsh dead winter scene. I also like the fact that there are shots of things like a train ticket when she is on the train and some leaves when she is in the forest.

One Direction - One Way Or Another
In this video, it looks like it is a home movie that the artist has shot themselves. Using this idea will link well with the ideas i have taken from the 'Your Song' video.

Kings of Leon - Radioactive. these three videos
The main idea from this video that I like is the slow motion and colour effects that have been put over the video to make it look like an old film reel playing or like an old photo effect that you'd find in a scrapbook
