FIRST MUSIC VIDEO INCOMPLETE DRAFT

This is my first draft of my music video. I spent around 2-3 weeks editing it together after using videos from 5 sessions of filming. Although it isn't a full music video, there are only a few parts that still need putting in. This is because I began my first day of filming before I decided to change my storyboard. After i had re-written some of it i then had to organise a day to film the new parts of the storyboard. On the first day of editing I decided that i would follow my storyboard exactly and so edited the videos to the exact same times as i had planned out. However, it then turned out that it was a really boring video and I decided to change it. I booked out a camera and took inspiration from the 3 videos in an earlier post and went and added some extra shots in editing. Although this draft doesn't match the storyboard exactly, i still used videos from it and most are in the same place as i had planned out except i have added in some extra videos and made shots that were supposed to last for 5 seconds long, last for shorter times.

Filming/New Ideas

As i have started editing i have noticed that the video doesn't look very exciting as there is not much movement and a lot of my shots last for 4/5 seconds which initially i didn't think seemed that long. However, when the camera isn't moving the shot looked dull. I then decided that i would have a few shots which were a number of videos sped up and put together to last a few seconds that would create a more exciting few seconds. I decided to go out at the weekend and film a few shots of the Christmas lights which would appear in my video for about 1 second in a montage of lots of clips edited together really fast. The lights were mainly purple and blue and white which was good because the connotations these colours have are passion and love with the purple but also the blue connotes sadness and loneliness which are both of the main emotions i want my main character and artist in my video to be portraying.

I have also watched 3 more music videos which have been recommended for me to see and I have found out that instead of having one action from one angle for 6 seconds at a time, to do the same action but from multiple different angles which means that the video is more exciting and not just one shot being boring because of the faster edits. However, it won't seem like faster edits because it will be the same actions happening.

Ellie Goulding - Your Song
I like the effects that have been used on the video here because it makes it look 'softer' and less like a harsh dead winter scene. I also like the fact that there are shots of things like a train ticket when she is on the train and some leaves when she is in the forest.

One Direction - One Way Or Another
In this video, it looks like it is a home movie that the artist has shot themselves. Using this idea will link well with the ideas i have taken from the 'Your Song' video.

Kings of Leon - Radioactive. these three videos
The main idea from this video that I like is the slow motion and colour effects that have been put over the video to make it look like an old film reel playing or like an old photo effect that you'd find in a scrapbook

Filming (2)

On Sunday 24th I organised for some more filming to be done. I arranged for my two lead cast members to come over for about 3-4 hours of filming to be done. On Friday I booked a camera and tripod from college and on Saturday afternoon i organised what we would be doing on Sunday so that we could get straight to filming so that no time was wasted.
I planned what we would need, where we would film first, what I needed them to bring with them and what we would have for lunch in between. As it was rather cold on Sunday I didn't want to spend much time outside in the woods and as it was about a 10 minute walk to get to where we needed I made sure that everyone was wearing suitable footwear and warm clothes. I also brought out some hot drinks in flasks for us to have (which we did) whilst filming outside which warmed us up. Filming in the woods was mainly a success apart from the fact that we had to carry all of the equipment from the car to the location.
When I did my first bit of filming, I found out that I needed to use something that would allow me to move the camera on smoothly. As I wouldn't be able to set up a smooth base in the woods I tried to create something that i could attach the camera to that had wheels so i would be able to wheel it along the ground. Even though i managed to attach it to a trolley unfortunately due to the ground being too uneven and there being no suspension on the trolley, it didn't work that well. When I re-shoot the woods scene I have decided to use more shots that are like long shots and mid shots rather than fewer that involve moving the camera as I can then add movement to the shots in editing.
We spent about 2h in the woods leaving us 2h to have lunch and film. When we got back I made the three of us lunch and afterwards talked through what we would be doing next. There was around 1h30m left after we had had a break.
The next place I needed to film was in my garden where I needed a small fire lit to toast marshmallows on. I had asked my dad if he could set us up a fire (using the incinerator which was just a fitted out old metal dustbin.) He then stayed down to keep an eye on it whilst we filmed so that it kept low and manageable. As neither of them had ever done it before we spent about 10m practicing first. Filming on the garden bench was easy as I wanted them to look natural and as though they weren't acting or putting it on so it didn't take long to get what footage I needed. There was then about 30m left just to film a few shots at the car which I left until the end as I needed to film them driving away so I filmed them as they were leaving which was pretty easy to set up.
Overall, it was a mostly successful day of filming and they both enjoyed it which is good!
I know I will need to re-shoot some of it to use in my final video so I will put in more shots overall and use the editing suite to add more movement to the shots if I'm not able to track for example in the woods.

Pathos

e.g "Wrecking Ball"
"That quality or property of anything which touches the feelings or excites emotions and passions, especially, that which awakens tender emotions, such as pity, sorrow, and the like; contagious warmth of feeling, action, or expression; pathetic quality"
  • (rhetoric) A writer's attempt to persuade an audience through appeals involving the use of strong emotions not strictly limited to pity.
  • (literature) An author's attempt to evoke a feeling of pity or sympathetic sorrow for a character.
  • (theology, philosophy) In theology and existentialist ethics following Kierkegaard and Heidegger, a deep and abiding commitment of the heart, as in the notion of "finding your passion" as an important aspect of a fully lived, engaged life.

Rhetoric is the art of discourse, an art that aims to improve the capability of writers or speakers that attempt to inform, persuade, or motivate particular audiences in specific situations

The three modes of persuasion:
Pathos represents an appeal to the audience's emotions. Pathos is a communication technique used most often in rhetoric (where it is considered one of the three modes of persuasion, alongside ethos and logos), and in literature, film and other narrative art.

Ethos is a Greek word meaning "character" that is used to describe the guiding beliefs or ideals that characterize a community, nation, or ideology.

Logos is logical appeal or the simulation of it, and the term logic is derived from it. It is normally used to describe facts and figures that support the speaker's claims or thesis. Having a logos appeal also enhances ethos because information makes the speaker look knowledgeable and prepared to his or her audience.

Health and Safety

Vicki is a trained first aider, although she is mainly trained for sports injuries, she knows about basic first aid which means that for example if when we are walking through the woods with the equipment and costumes if someone falls, she will know what to do.
